SNOM 710 - PnP works perfect but...

Hi,

Using ver 4.5.0.1090 linux

Just picked up a new SNOM 710 to test.

I followed the "How to add autoprovisioning support for snom 710 in snom ONE" from the snomone wiki so now my ver 4.5.0.1090 can do PnP for the new SNOM 710 phones.

The PBX is in a datacentre so I setup the snom 710 for WAN PnP. I've done many SNOM 3xx series and 870 PnP phones on same system with no problems.

The snom 710 does all the PnP and downloads the new firmware ver 8.7.3.19. During the firmware update all of the snom 710 display messages show 100%...shows successful update.

The phone reboots after the successful firmware update....the extension name gets displayed...the top line shows "Provisioning in progress..." then top line shows SW-Update Failed and the Info button is flashing...I press on the Info button and it displays SW-Update failed do you want to retry/redo....I select cancel.

My SNOM 710 looks fine...extension name and all functions work...make/receive calls....in the PBX change call forwarding number and it pushes it to the 710 so I know the PnP worked and it's talking to the PBX. When I program the 5 buttons in the PBX it pushes it to the 710 and they take effect but it also makes the 710 think it has to do an update so it reboots and does the downloading of the firmware again even though it's the same ver 8.7.3.19 that is in the PBX PnP page.

It's almost like the 710 internally thinks it failed the software update because it didn't get an ok from the PBX maybe? So it keeps the failed to update flag turned to yes internally?

Any idea how to solve this problem?

The snom 710 log even shows it was successful:

snom 710 was not available when version 4.5 was released. It was added in version 5.

Not sure what your getting at? I know the PBX interface didn't have the 710 and that's why snom posted the "How to add the 710"....I did that part so my ver 4.5.0.1090 has the 710.

ver 5 came out in Nov 2012 but the 710's were available Aug 2012. Even PBX Support posts in this forum Sept 4th, 2012 showing what files need to be updated in the PBX:

http://forum.snomone.com/index.php?/topic/6278-snom-710/

The SNOM 720 and 760 are in ver 4.5. There shouldn't be any difference for snom 710.

My 710 PnP works but the phone thinks the firmware/SW-update failed....you can clear that message and use the phone and it 100% works but if you reboot the phone or push a config change to the 710 it takes it but at the same time the phone tries to update firmware again.

Are you saying you 100% know it won't work with ver 4.5.0.1090? If so please tell me why it wont work?

Has anyone else used the snom 710 with ver 4.5.0.1090?

4.5.0 was released around June 2012. That's why the 710 did not make it. We had support cases where people tried to get the 710 working with 4.5, and the bottom line is: Of course they work in 4.5, but you better manually configure them.

We added more than just a few pnp.xml entries to the new release. If you look at the file structure you will notice that several things have changed. The button provisioning has been overhauled. Also the MAC-based provisioning which uses the 7xx certificates has been reworked. XML-RPC has been added. These are things that you don't just put into the pnp.xml file and hit the save button.

Hi Snom ONE,

I understand ver 5 has a few new neat features like the xml-rpc(pretty cool feature), button provisioning based on type of phone, etc but my post is not about why don't I have these features in ver 4.5.

The new ver 5 will be great for my next server but my current server running ver 4.5 I have spent $15,000.00 just on the software license. Once my ver 4.5 server maxes out then my second server will be a ver 5 server.

Back to my problem....

The PnP for my snom 710 and ver 4.5 worked but on my snom 710 I get that 1 line msg at the top SW-Update failed (but it really didn't fail) so I clear it and my phone is fine....all PnP is there. My post is how do I fix that problem? Has anyone seen that before and if so where in the snom 710 is the setting?

You mention "...and the bottom line is: Of course they work in 4.5, but you better manually configure them", this is why I posted in this forum asking for your help or anyone's help.

- to get rid of that message "SW-Update Failed" do I manually have to add a line or set a special setting to the:

A) pnp.xml file

B snom_3xx_fs.xml file

C) snom_710.xml

D) snom_3xx_fw.xml

or do I have to create a custom snom_710_custom.xml and add something specfic to it? Or maybe I have to manually go inside the snom 710 PUI and set something? I don't know the answer this is why I'm asking for help.

Thanks

We also saw the message "SW update failed" in version 5. This seems to be some strange bug in the phone. I cannot even guarantee that after you upgrade to V5 this message will disappear. It seems that 7.3.19 is still the latest & greatest version, hopefully those strange messages will disappear in the next version. The phone on my desk (a 710 :-)) made it and the SW update message is not there any more.

Hi,

I am about to deploy some 18 snom 710s as extensions of a snom one mini already running version 4.5.1 in a nearby city. Should I attempt to do pnp or should I leave it alone and just point the 710s towards the pbx as if they were a non pnp capable phones?

Regards,

Plug and play would be the way to go, you will have more control over the phone and can change parameters on the fly if need be.

If you're going to use any firmware on the 7xx series we recommend you to use 8.7.3.19

also the plug and play is extremely easy on version 5.

http://wiki.snom.com/Firmware/V8/710

The firmware for 7xx series has some new mechanism that double check the version to make sure everything is legit. should not be a show stopper.

Thanks for the advice. I am not afraid of work and if the only problem can be a harmless message, I will just disregard it, tell the users not to worry about it either and keep on making calls.

Regards!

Carlos, you can clear the message and keep on making calls but if you push something to the phone where it needs to reboot then it will also download the 8.7.3.19 firmware again....even if the firmware on the phone is already at 8.7.3.19.

Maybe with your PBX ver 4.5.1 you might not run into this, snomone said with his snom 710 and PBX ver 5 he doesn't get this error message

Let us know if you get that error message on your ver 4.5.1 (that ver was put out by Vodia). I don't think you will get the error message.

Thanks for the advice. I am attempting to create the file snom_710.xml at this very moment. However, I am not finding the right folder. I was able to get to /usr/local/snomONE/ however, the html folder that should be under snomONE is simply not there, it should be between hoots and hunts and it is just not listed. Is it in a different place in my 4.5.1 verision?

Help is, as always, very appreciate it.

Regards

By default the html folder is not created on new installs, you have to create the html directory, the same with the tftp directory.

Hi!

It is good to have friends with different skills and backgrounds. Sombody helped me doing the linux stuff and it worked just fine. I am not sure what do you mean by pushing something into the phone, but I did a power cycle and the phone did not attempt to do the firmware download again. It only did it once, and not again. The only weird message was "Download Language Failed", but that is something that has appeared in other phones and I just disregard it and the phone works fine.

So, go for 4.5.1 It seems to be working fine.

Cheers!

What I mean by push something out to the phone is if you change a button/LED in the pbx web interface for a phone it then has to send that config change to the snom 710 = push. or even just changing the persons name for the extension you will see the name change on your snom 710 display.

Since you didn't have the same problem as I did and your using ver 4.5.1 which was put out by Vodia/Snom and I'm using ver 4.5.0.1090 with same snom 710 phone but I do get the SW Update failed message tells me I think Vodia/Snom put something in their snom 710 ver 8.7.3.15 and 8.7.3.19 firmware that can tell I'm using ver 4.5.0.1090 and they display that error message....why? because they want you to move to ver 5...this is just my opinion.

My snom 710 out of the box running firmware ver 8.7.3.8 did the PnP with no problems and no SW Update failed message....soon as I upgrade firmware to .15 or .19 I get the SW Update: Failed message on the snom 710 display.

My snom 720 running firmware ver 8.7.3.19 doesn't get this error and I'm using ver 4.5.0.1090.

Check the version of what? Make sure what is legit?

My snom 710 is legit and my $15,000.00 snomone pbx ver 4.5.0.1090 license is legit.
